Which Roof Is Right for Your Central Texas Home? 5 Roofing Options Explained

Comparison of 5 roofing options for Central Texas homes

The roof that’s right for your neighbor might be completely wrong for your home, and that’s why Roam Roof and Solar made this video. In this post, you’ll see all of your roofing options explained.

Choosing a new roof isn’t just about price or shingle color. You also need to consider how long you plan to stay in the home, your insurance coverage, Central Texas hail risk, your budget, and the level of protection you want.

At ROAM Roof & Solar, we offer five main roofing package levels, from premium long-life systems to standard architectural shingles.

The goal isn’t to sell everyone the most expensive roof. It’s to help you understand which system makes the most sense for your home.

The 9 Components of a Roof System

What Type of Roof Is Best for Central Texas? Roofing Options Explained

There isn’t one answer for every homeowner.

For maximum durability, premium systems such as stone-coated steel or synthetic roofing may make sense. Homeowners who want strong hail resistance in a traditional shingle often choose Class 4 architectural shingles. Class 3 shingles provide another impact-resistant option at a lower cost, while standard architectural shingles can make sense when budget or resale timing is the priority.

Why Impact Resistance Matters in Texas

Texas homeowners are increasingly responsible for a larger portion of roof replacement costs because insurance policies, deductibles, depreciation, and coverage can vary significantly.

That makes the quality of the roof you install today more important.

Class 4 is the highest impact-resistance classification under the UL 2218 test. Class 3 and Class 4 roofing products are designed to provide greater impact resistance than conventional non-rated shingles.

Some insurance companies may also offer discounts for qualifying impact-resistant roofing.

Before choosing your roof, ask your insurance agent:

“Does my policy offer a discount for Class 3 or Class 4 impact-resistant roofing?”

The answer could affect which package provides the best long-term value.

1. Citadel: Premium Long-Life Roofing

ROAM’s Citadel Package includes premium options such as stone-coated steel and synthetic or rubber roofing products.

These systems are designed for long-term durability, severe-weather performance, reduced maintenance, and a distinctive appearance.

Citadel may be right for you if:

You plan to stay in the home long-term, want maximum storm protection, and would rather invest in a premium system designed to perform for decades.

It may not make as much sense if you’re planning to sell in the next few years or if budget is the primary concern.

2. Icon: Designer Class 4 Roofing

The Icon Package combines Class 4 impact resistance with premium designer shingles.

This option is for homeowners who care about both protection and curb appeal.

Designer shingles provide more dimension, texture, and visual character than a standard architectural shingle.

Icon makes sense when:

You want Class 4 protection and you also want the roof to make a noticeable architectural statement.

If you want the same Class 4 rating without paying for the designer appearance, Guardian may be the better choice.

3. Guardian: Class 4 Architectural Shingles

For many Central Texas homeowners, Guardian is the sweet spot.

Guardian combines the familiar look of an architectural shingle with a Class 4 impact rating.

It provides strong hail resistance without requiring a major change in the appearance of your home.

Depending on your insurance carrier, it may also qualify for premium discounts.

Guardian makes sense when:

You want strong hail protection, a traditional shingle appearance, and a roofing system designed for Central Texas weather.

This is one of the most popular options among ROAM homeowners.

4. Enhanced: Class 3 Impact-Resistant Shingles

The Enhanced Package uses Class 3 architectural shingles.

Class 3 provides a meaningful step up in impact resistance from standard shingles while staying at a lower investment than Class 4.

Enhanced makes sense when:

You want better hail resistance but need to keep the project within a tighter budget.

The important comparison is the actual price difference between Enhanced and Guardian. If the jump to Class 4 is manageable, it may be worth considering.

5. Standard: Architectural Shingles

ROAM’s Standard Package uses architectural asphalt shingles.

These are legitimate dimensional roofing shingles—not old-style three-tab builder shingles.

Standard can be a good option when budget is the primary concern or when you’re preparing to sell the home and don’t want to overinvest.

The tradeoff is that Standard does not offer the same impact-resistance classification as Enhanced or Guardian.

What About Standing-Seam Metal Roofing?

Standing-seam metal can provide excellent durability and long-term performance.

But homeowners should understand the difference between functional and cosmetic hail damage.

Large hail may dent metal without causing a leak. Those dents can still affect appearance and resale value, and some insurance policies may exclude cosmetic damage.

For that reason, ROAM evaluates standing-seam metal on a case-by-case basis rather than automatically placing it in the Citadel package.

Class 4 offers the higher laboratory impact classification, but neither rating means a roof is completely hail-proof.

How Do You Choose the Right Roof?

For most homeowners, the decision comes down to four questions:

  • How long do you plan to stay in the home?
  • What does your insurance policy cover?
  • How much hail and storm risk are you comfortable accepting?
  • How important are appearance and long-term durability?

The best roof isn’t automatically the most expensive one.

It’s the roofing system that makes the most sense for your home, your budget, and how long you plan to own it.
